Solve the first equation for y, that is arrange it so that you have y by itself on the left and everything else on the right (the same way your second equation is arranged). For example, if you have an equation in the form:
then you can solve it for y thus:
The slope, m, is the coefficient on the x term. If the slope numbers in both equations are equal but the constant terms are different, then the lines are parallel. If the slope numbers are equal and the constant terms are also equal, then the equations both represent the same line. If the slope numbers are negative reciprocals of each other, that is:
then the lines are perpendicular. If none of these conditions hold, then the lines are neither parallel nor perpendicular.
