You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First graph the given equation y = 2x
.
This equation is in the slope intercept form y = mx + b in which m (the multiplier of x) is
the slope of the line and b the constant is the value on the y-axis where the graph intersects
(crosses) the y-axis.
.
By comparing the given equation with the slope intercept form you can tell that the graph
should have a slope of 2 because 2 is the multiplier of x. The constant b must equal zero
because there is no constant on the right side of the given equation. This tells you that the
graph crosses the y-axis at the origin because the y value at the origin is zero.
.
So you know the graph crosses through the origin and has a slope of 2. You can also use
some points to determine the graph. For example, you can let x = 10. Plug this value for
x into the given equation to find the corresponding value of y and you get:
.
y = 2x = 2(10) = 20
.
With x = 10 and the corresponding value of y = 20, you can mark the point (10,20) and
it will be on the graph. Put a straight edge on the origin and the point (10, 20) and
extend a line through those two points. That is the graph and it should look like this:
.
graph%28400%2C+400%2C+-15%2C+15%2C+-20%2C20%2C2x%29
.
But the problem tells you that you are only interested in that portion of the graph where
x has values from 0 to +5. Go along the x axis to the value +5. Draw a vertical line through
+5 to the point where it intersects the graph. (That point will be (5,10)). Erase the
part of the graph that is to the right of that vertical line. Then go back to the origin
where the value of x is zero. Erase all of the graph that lies to the left of that point
(that is erase that part of the graph that is in the third quadrant ... left of the y-axis.
.
What you have left is a graph that starts at the origin and goes to the point (5,10) and
that's it. That should be what you are looking for.
