(1) The "OR" means the solution set will be two separate intervals, so you will have to use the symbol for a union of sets.

(2) For each interval, use the bracket [ or ] only if the endpoint of the interval is included, as indicated by a "less than or equal to" or "greater than or equal to" symbol.

(3) Infinity and negative infinity are not numbers, so they are never included in the solution set; that means you always use ( ) instead of [ ] for negative infinity or infinity.

So...
(-infinity, -1] union (2, infinity)

(bracket only at -1, because that is the only endpoint of either interval which is included in the solution set)
