Question 503296: F(x)= 3x-8
-----
4x+20
This means wherever you see the letter x, you replace it with (3x-8) since that is the given function.
Therefore it would be set up:
4(3x-8)+20=0
Next, distribute (multiply 4(3x) and 4(-8)
12x-32+20=0
(-32+20 can be condensed)
12x-12=0
Now you want your x's on one side, and numbers on the other.
This is done by adding 12 to both sides so it cancels on one side, and transfers over to the other.
12x=12
Finally, we want x by itself to determine what its value is.
This is done by dividing by the number attached to the x.
And remember, whatever you do to one side, needs to be done to the other.
Therefore, divide both sides by 12
x=1
