Question 161526: given the algebraic relation x=y^2+1, determine the domain, range, and whether or not it is a funtion. on my graphing calculator it shows a line that starts at (-.851,.386)to infinity. it shows it as though if you did a vertical line test, it would be a function. I'm confused because if I insert a pos # into y or a - # into y, squaring it will give you the same number. you can't have 2 different y's giving the same x or it is not a function, right?

Question 161843: A section of the Uncanoonuc Mountains, called the West Side Trail, is located in New Hampshire. The trail has a vertical change of about 268 feet vertically for every 1000 feet it moves along Horizontally. What is the slope of the trail?
slope=rate of change= (change in y)/ (change in x)= (vertical change)/(horizontal change)
slope= 268 feet/1000ft=268/1000=67/250

Question 161853: This one is giving me alot of trouble. The question is: Given f(x)=3x+5, find f(a-1). Please help explain this to me!!
Notice that x is an independent variable which can be replaced with any number; numbers; or other variables...in this case we want to substitute it with (a-1)...
f(x)=3x+5 then
f(a-1)=3(a-1)+5....any time you substitute x with anything you must place that in parenthesis like I did to show the substitution
so
f(a-1)=3a-3+5 (by distributing 3 to (a-1), i.e. multiplying 3 with variables inside the parenthesis to get rid of parenthesis), then
f(a-1)=3a+2 by simplifying (adding like terms together)

I put it into the equation x = -b/2a which I got -3.155 rounded off =3
i then put the -3 into the original equation and I got the answer of -.5226 so I am guessing I did something wrong!
