Question 882022: If y=f%28x%29+=+%283x+%2B+7%29%2F%284x+-+9%29+, show that x+=+f%28y%29
Answer by Edwin McCravy(20056) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y=%22f%28x%29%22+=+%283x+%2B+7%29%2F%284x+-+9%29+, show that x+=+%22f%28y%29%22
Sorry but that is just not true in general.

Here is a disproof by a counterexample.

If it were true in general it would be true if x = 1

Suppose x = 1

y=%22f%28x%29%22+=+%283x+%2B+7%29%2F%284x+-+9%29+

y=%22f%281%29%22+=+%283%281%29+%2B+7%29%2F%284%281%29+-+9%29+

y=%22f%281%29%22+=+%283+%2B+7%29%2F%284+-+9%29+

y=%22f%281%29%22+=+10%2F%28-5%29+

y=%22f%281%29%22+=+-2+

Now in order for what we are asked to prove to be true in this
case, we must end up with

x+=+%22f%28y%29%22, which in this case would be

1+=+%22f%28-2%29%22

However f(-2) is found by substituting x=-2 in

y=%22f%28x%29%22+=+%283x+%2B+7%29%2F%284x+-+9%29+

-2=f%28-2%29+=+%283%28-2%29+%2B+7%29%2F%284%28-2%29+-+9%29+

-2=f%28-2%29+=+%28-6+%2B+7%29%2F%28-8+-+9%29+

-2=f%28-2%29+=+1%2F%28-17%29+

-2=f%28-2%29+=+-1%2F17+

which is false. So what you were asked to
prove is not true.
