The denominator tells you that x%3C-1 OR x%3E-1.

Actually, the domain would be a set of numbers, so you want to include ALL of the numbers. The "OR" is not really needed. The domain is all real numbers in -4%3C=x%3C1 and 1%3Cx%3C=4.
