All linear equations are functions, except those in the form x = C (C is constant) because one of the qualifications of a function is that each x (or independent variable) map to at most one y (here, one x maps to infinitely many y).

A non-linear function is simply a function that is not linear. For example, y = x^2 is non-linear.
