According to what you posted, there are no parentheses so I interpret it as f%28x%29+=+-2x%5E2+%2B+6, i.e. you square the value of x, multiply it by -2, then add 6, by the order of operations. Here, f%28-3%29+=+-2%28-3%29%5E2+%2B+6+=+-18+%2B+6+=+-12.
