Question 338420: I don't know how to explain to my child how to get this.
%28c-5%29%2F4%22%22=%22%223

Answer by Edwin McCravy(20059) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
%28c-5%29%2F4%22%22=%22%223

When you do the same thing to both sides of an equation,
you get another equivalent equation.

So let's multiply both sides of the equation by red%284%29

red%284%29%22%22%2A%22%22%28c-5%29%2F4%22%22=%22%22red%284%29%22%22%2A%22%223

Now the 4's will cancel out on the left and the right side becomes 12 because it's %224%D73%22

red%28cross%284%29%29%22%22%2A%22%22%28c-5%29%2Fcross%284%29%22%22=%22%2212

So all that's left is

c-5%22%22=%22%2212

When you do the same thing to both sides of an equation,
you get another equation.

This time let's add 5 to both sides of the equation:

c-5%2Bred%285%29%22%22=%22%2212%2Bred%285%29

Now the -5 and the %22%22%2B5 cancel out on the left,
and the right becomes 17 because ut's 12%2B5

c-cross%285%29%2Bred%28cross%285%29%29%22%22=%22%2217

So all that's left is

c=17

and that is the answer. Now we can check to make sure it's right.

Start with the original:

%28c-5%29%2F4%22%22=%22%223

Susbtitute 17 for c

%2817-5%29%2F4%22%22=%22%223

We put 12 in place of the 17-5

12%2F4%22%22=%22%223

Now we divide the 12 by the 4, and we get

3%22%22=%22%223

And since the numbers on both sides of the equal sign
are the same, we know we did it correctly, and the
answer is c=17.
