Question 12016: I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this or not, but what exactly is a base function? For an example in my homework: Sketch the graph of the following function. List the base graph and transformations made to it.
f(x)=-2x^3+4
I missed a class and this is nowhere in my book (i'm in college and she doesn't use it) i have a test coming up and this looks like a major part of it. Please help!!! thanks! Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! I'm not exactly sure, but I think probably the base function for the function f(x)= 2x^3 + 4 would be f(x) = x^3.
Then you graph the base function, and from that you figure out what would happen to the graph if you multiplied it by 2 (answer, it essentially makes the graph "twice" as steep!), and then what is the effect of adding +4(answer, it moves the graph up 4 units on the graph!) to obtain f(x)= 2x^3 + 4. So, it should be steeper, and up 4 units. Check it out with the following graphs.
