You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you are given the points:
( -4, k )
( -1, 2k )
( 0, -7 )
-------------
+y+=+m%2Ax+%2B+b+
+k+=+m%2A%28-4%29+%2B+%28-7%29+
(1) +k+=+-4m+-+7+
------------------------
+2k+=+m%2A%28-1%29+%2B+%28-7%29+
(2) +2k+=+-m+-+7+
---------------------------
I can substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +2%2A%28+-4m+-+7+%29+=+-m+-+7+
(2) +-8m+-+14+=+-m+-+7+
(2) +7m+=+-7+
(2) +m+=+-1+
+y+=+-x+-+7+
--------------------
(1) +k+=+-4%2A%28-1%29+-+7+
(1) +k+=+4+-+7+
(1) +k+=+-3+
-------------------------
check answer:
( -4, k ) = ( -4, -3 )
( -1, 2k ) = ( -1, -6 )
------------------------

+%28+y+-%28-6%29+%29+%2F+%28+x+-%28-1+%29%29+=+3+%2F+%28-3%29+
+%28+y+%2B+6+%29+%2F+%28+x+%2B+1+%29+=+-1+
+y+%2B+6+=+-1%2A%28+x+%2B+1+%29+
+y+%2B+6+=+-x+-+1+
+y+=+-x+-+7+
OK

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if the line through (-4, k) and (-1,2k) you can find a slope
slope is:
m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29
m=%282k-k%29%2F%28-1-%28-4%29%29
m=-k%2F3
y-intercept of -7: (0, -7)

if the line have a y-intercept of -7, use slope intercept formula
y=mx%2Bb where b is y-intercept and m is a slope, substitute both
y=%28k%2F3%29x-7.......use point, (-1, 2k)
2k=%28k%2F3%29%28-1%29-7....solve for k
2k=-k%2F3-7...both sides multiply by 3
6k=-k-21
6k%2Bk=-21
7k+=+-21
k+=+-21%2F7
k=-3
then slope is m=k%2F3=>m=-3%2F1=>m=-1
so, the line is:
y=-x-7,

and two points will be:

(-4, -3) and (-1,-6)

I encourage students to practice being able to solve problems like this using your UNDERSTANDING of the problem, without the formal algebra.

As you will see (comparing my solution method with those shown in the other responses you have gotten), finding the answer is much easier this way (if you understand it!) than with the formal algebra.

(1) The line passes through the points (-4,k) and (-1,2k). So in moving 3 to the right, from -4 to -1, the y value changes by k, from k to 2k.

(2) We want the value of k that makes the y-intercept -7.

(3) The y-intercept is when x=0, which is 1 unit to the right of (-1,2k).

(4) Since this is a straight line, changing the y value by k when the x value changes by 3 means changing the y value by k/3 when the value of x changes by 1.

(5) So the y-intercept is at (0,2k+k/3), or (0,7k/3).

(6) Since we want the y-intercept to be (0,-7),

7k%2F3+=+-7
7k+=+-21
k+=+-3

ANSWER: k = -3

.

They want you find k in this way that the three points, P1= (-4,k), P2= (-1,2k) and P3= (0,-7) lie in one line.

It means that      the slope from P1 to P2,  m%5B12%5D = %282k-k%29%2F%28-1-%28-4%29%29 = k%2F3

should be equal to the slope from P2 to P3,  m%5B23%5D = %28-7-2k%29%2F%280-%28-1%29%29 = %28-7-2k%29%2F1 = -7-2k.

It gives you an equation

    k%2F3 = -7 - 2k

    k = -21 - 6k

    k + 6k = - 21

    7k     = - 21

     k     = %28-21%29%2F7 = -3.    ANSWER

Solved.

It is pure  Algebra solution  (Algebra to which we teach at this site),  presented in a way  as it  SHOULD  BE  presented,
and now you can compare which of the  4  solutions is simpler and better for you.
