Question 1114874: a) There is a linear relationship between the wind speed, s, in mph, for hurricanes and the barometric pressure, b, in millibars, mb. Use the points (950, 110) and (1000, 50) to write a linear function that defines the wind speed as a linear function of the barometric pressure.
b) interpret the slope in the context of the problem.
c) interpret the y-intercept in the context of the problem.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There is a linear relationship between the wind speed, s, in mph, for hurricanes and the barometric pressure, b, in millibars, mb.
:
Use the points (950, 110) and (1000, 50) to write a linear function that defines the wind speed as a linear function of the barometric pressure.
:
Use the point/slope form; y - y1 = m(x - x1). find the slope (m)
x = 950, y = 110
x1= 1000 y1 = 50
110 - 50 = m(950 - 1000)
60 = -50m
m = 60%2F%28-50%29
m = -1.2
Use the slope intercept form y = mx + b to find b
-1.2(950) + b = 110
-1140 + b = 110
b = 110 + 1140
b = 1250
the equation
y = -1.2x + 1250
:
b) interpret the slope in the context of the problem.
Wind speed increases at barometric pressure drops. At 1250 mb there is no wind
:
c) interpret the y-intercept in the context of the problem.
When x = 0 (no atmosphere at all) wind speed 1140 mph, obviously not going to happen here on earth
"A figure of 870 millibars was recorded on 12 Oct 1979 by the US Air Weather Service 483 km west of Guam in the Pacific Ocean in the eye of Super Typhoon Tip, which involved wind speeds of 165 kts (190 mph)." (That is about 883 mb on our graph)
