What if you say, a=x-3, and put this into your function?

f%28a%2B3%29=a-2, as given.
Let a=x-3;
f%28%28x-3%29%2B3%29=%28x-3%29-2
f%28x-3%2B3%29=x-3-2
highlight%28f%28x%29=x-5%29

The trick was to decide to let a=x-3, which simplifies the function input into just the single variable.
