Question 193749: I am trying to figure the original amount & sales tax amount to come up with the total amount charged when I've lost receipts... Sales tax rate of 8.7% - So I think you do something like: X + (X*8.7%)= 25.31 (total amount)
So I remember that you want to get all the x's on one side, so divide both sides by 8.7% but that comes up way wrong... so I'm doing something wrong. Can someone please give me the right formula. Thank you. Jackie

1)A total of Rs 14000 invested for a year , part at 5% and the rest at 6.5% . If Rs 760 is the total interest, how much is invested at 5%.
2)Mr javed invested a total of Rs 10,000 in three different accouts , the accounts paid simple interest at an annual rate of 8%, 9%,7.5% respectively. Total interest earned for the year was Rs 845 . The amount in the 9% account was the twice the amount invested in the 7.5% account. How much did Mr.Javed invest in each account.

This is what I have done:

Joe must have a take home pay of $30,400 to live comfortably and pay all his bills. If the government gets 24% of Joe’s income, then what must Joe’s income be in order for him to live comfortably and pay all this bills.
(1 - 0.24) = 0.76x
x = 30,400/.76 = $40,000
