You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let X = the number of nickels
Let 3X = the number of dimes because there are 3 times as many dimes as nickels
a nickel is worth .05
a dime is worth .10
the equation is:
.10(3X) + .05X = 50.05
.30X + .05X = 50.05
.35X = 50.05
X = 143
there are 143 nickels
3(143) = 429 there are 429 dimes
check your work
143 x .05 = 7.15
429 x .10 = 42.90
7.15 + 42.90 = 50.05
