Question 401830: The question I'm having trouble solving is: Anne took three friends out to dinner and paid a total bill of $54.30, which included 6% in taxes and a 15% tip (on the cost of the meals). What was the cost of the meals before tax and tip? I understand that you will have to multiply 54.30 by something in relationship with the 15% and the 6% but I'm stuck on which number it is that I should multiply 54.30 by. All help is appreciated! Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you need to eat out more...

meals + tax + tip = 54.30

the tax and tip are percentages of the meal

m + m(6%) + m(15%) = 54.30

factoring ___ m[1 + .06 + .15] = 54.30 ___ m(1.21) = 54.30
