Question 1193882: Please help me to solve the following maths problem.
1. Four apartments in a small block of flats, each of these four apartments has a representative on the body corporate. The committee must calculate the share that each owner pays towards various expenses. They decide that the owners will pay a share that is in proportion to the floor area of their apartment. The respective floor areas are as follows: flat 1 & 2 =90 meters squared, flat 3= 100 meters squared, flat 4=120 meters squared, there are monthly and annual expenses for these apartments. The body corporate will charge a monthly levy to each of the owners to cover all of the expenses. Average monthly water bill is R340, average monthly refusal removal is R66, average monthly sewerage is R96, annual rates and taxes are R22300, annual maintenance is R12000.
1.1. Calculate the total monthly expenses for the body corporate.
1.2. Calculate the value of each owners monthly levy for the above mentioned expenses.
1.3. The committee decide to pay the gardener, who works once a week, out of the maintenance money. He is paid R100 per day and given an annual bonus of R1000.
1.3.1 how much does the gardener earn per annum?( assume there are 52 weeks in a year).
1.3.2 what is the ratio of the gardener's annual salary to the average annual maintenance.
1.3.3 what is the ratio of the rates and taxes fee to the total annual expenditure.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
see my spreadsheet below:

answers to your questions.

1.1. Calculate the total monthly expenses for the body corporate.
$3,360.33

1.2. Calculate the value of each owners monthly levy for the above mentioned expenses.
$756.08 for flat 1
$756.08 for flat 2
$840.08 for flat 3
$1,008.10 for flat 4

1.3. The committee decide to pay the gardener, who works once a week, out of the maintenance money.
He is paid R100 per day and given an annual bonus of R1000.

1.3.1 how much does the gardener earn per annum?( assume there are 52 weeks in a year).
$6,200.00

1.3.2 what is the ratio of the gardener's annual salary to the average annual maintenance.
0.51667 rounded to 5 decimal places.

1.3.3 what is the ratio of the annual rates and taxes to the total annual expenditure.
0.55302 rounded to 5 decimal places.

the general procedure was to translate the cost per month to cost per year and to translate the cost per year to cost per month, so that the per month costs and the per year costs were in synch with each other.

the costs per flat were derived by taking the square feet of each flat and dividing it by the total square feet for all flats and then multiplying that times the total cost per month and the total cost per year.

since the yearly costs and monthly costs were in synch, the ratio was the same whether you were dealing with monthly ratio or yearly ratio.

i've checked this a couple of time and am pretty sure it's correct.
let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
