You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
brian is walking ALONG a trail at an average rate of 3 miles per hour.
carol is bicycling along the same trail in the same direction at an average rate of 9 miles per hour.
at 12:00 noon brian is 5 miles ahead of carol. if brian and carol maintain these rates,
at what time will carol overtake brian?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 12:00, Brian is 5 miles ahead of Carol.
Their relative speed is 9-3 = 6 miles per hour, i.e. Carol decreases the distance between them at the rate of 6 miles per hour,
or 1 miles every 10 minutes.
THEREFORE, Carol will overtake Brian in 50 minutes, at 12:45.
