Question 1169126: A car license plate contains five letters followed by two digits. How many different plates can be made if no two letters can be the same, if the letters I and O cannot be used, and if the first of the two digits cannot be the number 0? Answer by greenestamps(13200) (Show Source):
(1) Find the number of choices for each character on the license plate.
1st of the 5 letters (any of the 26 except I or O): 24
2nd letter (any except I, O, or the 1st letter): 23
3rd letter (...): ___
4th letter: ___
5th letter: ___
1st digit (any of the 10 except 0): 9
2nd digit (any): 10
(2) By the fundamental counting principle, the number of license plates is the product of the numbers of choices for each character.
You can do the arithmetic (might need a calculator...)
