            It is  VERY  IMPORTANT  to delete that  "a",  which  I  crossed in your post  (!)


Let x be the cost of the pies (I mean, TOTAL cost of all pies).


Then the total cost of all cakes was 1.5x, according to the problem's statement.


Thus for the total cost you have this equation

    x + 1.5x = 312   dollars

to find x.


From the equation,  

    2.5x = 312;   hence,  x = 312%2F2.5 = 124.80  dollars.


So, the cost of all 6 cakes is the rest  312 - 124.80 = 187.20 dollars;


hence, the price of one cake is  1%2F6  of it, i.e.  187.20%2F6 = 31.20 dollars.    ANSWER
