You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I set up a system of equations using n to represent the number of nickels and q represents the number of quarters. I then used substitution to solve.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +n+ = the number of nickels
Let +q+ = the number of quarters
--------------------------------------------
(1) +n+%2B+q+=+72+
(2) +5n+%2B+25q+=+1160+ ( in cents )
--------------------------------------------
(2) +n+%2B+5q+=+232+
Subtract (1) from (2)
+4q+=+160+
+q+=+40+
and
(1) +n+%2B+40+=+72+
(1) +n+=+32+
----------------------------
There were 32 nickels and 40 quarters
---------------------------------------------
check:
(2) +5%2A32+%2B+25%2A40+=+1160+
(2) +160n%2B+1000+=+1160+
OK
