The shorter piece is +8+ m shorter than
the longer piece
+p+ m = the length of the longer piece
+p+-+8+ = the length of the shorter piece
( I'm not sure if this is what they want )

+2p+=+38+
+p+=+19+
and
+p+-+8+=+11+
The lengths are 11 and 19
+11+%2B+19+=+30+
