Question 1103390: The load limit for a bridge is 10 t. A truck with a mass of 4 t carries a load of steel pipes with a mass of 300 kg each. What is the greatest number of steel pipes that can be carried over safely by the truck over the bridge?
Let the greatest number of steel pipes that can be carried be x.
Solve using inequalities.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the bridge can safely carry 10 tons.

the mass of the truck is 4 tons.

each pipe has a mass of 300 kilograms.

300 kilograms is equivalent to 0.330693 tons.

everything is now converted to tons.

the formula becomes 10 >= 4 + .330693 * x

subtract 4 from both sides of this inequality to get 6 >= .330693 * x

divide both sides of this inequality by .330693 to get 6 / .330693 >= x

solve for x to get x <= 18.14371638

round to the lowest integer to get x <= 18.

the most number of pipes that can be put on the truck is 18.

when that number is reached, the load plus the truck have a mass of 9.952474 tons which is under the limit.

put 19 pipes on the truck and the mass is 10.283167 tons which is above the limit.
