Let x be Max's age.


7(x-7) = 9(x-9) ------ this is what the description says.


7x - 49 = 9x - 81

81 - 49 = 2x

2x = 32

x = 32/2 = 16.


Answer.  Max is 16 years old.

The solution and the answer by @josgarithmetic are incorrect.
