You can put this solution on YOUR website!
AB=2%2ACD
CD=2%2ABC
AE=2%2AAB
AE=12
Working backwards,
2%2AAB=12
AB=6
.
.
6=2%2ACD
CD=3
.
.
BC=CD%2F2
BC=3%2F2
.
.
AD=AB%2BBC%2BCD
AD=6%2B3%2F2%2B3
AD=12%2F2%2B3%2F2%2B6%2F2
AD=21%2F2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

The given information tells you, in order,...
the length of CD compared to AB;
the length of BC compared to CD; and
the length of AB compared to AE.

And it tells you the length of AE.

So instead of working with the information in the order it is given, start by seeing what you can do with the given length of AE.

You are told that AB is AE/2, so you know immediately that AB is 6.

Then you are told that CD is half of AB, so CD is 3.

And you are told that BC is half of CD, so BC is 1.5.

The problem asks you to find the length of AD, which is AB+BC+CD, or
6+1.5+3 = 10.5

The lesson here: don't think you have to use the given information in the order it is given to you!
