You can put this solution on YOUR website! 3.075:
take the 3 and set it aside. We have 0.075, three decimals. That tells us how many zeros we need after the one, this is what I mean:
0.075= 75/1000
Now we reduce this fraction to its lowest terms by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 25. Why divide by 25? 25 is the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD)
or Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of the numbers 75 and 1000. How to find the GFC is something you should have learned by now. If not send me a note and I will explain.
Divide 75/25= 3
Divide 1000/25= 40
Your fraction is 3/40. Now bring back the 3 we set aside, the number is:
3 3/40
What does 3/40 mean? It means there are 40 cookies and you got 3, the bottom number is always the total and the top the portion that you have. So if we talk about a pizza that is divided in 8 slices and you get 1 slice, you get 1/8.
To make the number an improper fraction, multiply 3 times 40 and add it to the fraction 3, like this: 3*40= 120+3= 123 so your improper fraction is 123/40. Why? Because we said there are 40 cookies in the box, but now you're telling me you have 3 more boxes of cookies each with 40 cookies: 3*40= 120 cookies plus the 3 that you had = 123 cookies, these are in boxes of 40 cookies as indicated by the bottom number.
Since 3 of the boxes are unopened, more elegantly we say 3 and 3/40 or 3 3/40.
