SOLUTION: 0.4(x+0.7)=0.6(x-4.2) is the problem. I apply the distributive property and then get 0.4x+0.28=0.6x-2.52. I don't understand where to go from here to solve for x.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
0.4x+0.28=0.6x-2.52
------------------------
Multiply thru by 100 to get rid of all those pesky decimals:
40x + 28 = 60x - 252
Subtract 40x from both sides to get:
28 = 20x - 252
Add 252 to both sides to get:
20x = 280
Divide both sides by 20 to get:
x = 14

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
0.4%28x%2B0.7%29=0.6%28x-4.2%29 Start with the given equation.

0.4x%2B0.4%280.7%29=0.6x-0.6%284.2%29 Distribute

0.4x%2B0.28=0.6x-2.52 Multiply

100%280.4x%2B0.28%29=100%280.6x-2.52%29 Multiply both sides by 100 to make every number a whole number (ie it will move the decimal 2 spots to the right).

100%280.4x%29%2B100%280.28%29=100%280.6x%29-100%282.52%29 Distribute

40x%2B28=60x-252 Multiply

40x=60x-252-28 Subtract 28 from both sides.

40x-60x=-252-28 Subtract 60x from both sides.

-20x=-252-28 Combine like terms on the left side.

-20x=-280 Combine like terms on the right side.

x=%28-280%29%2F%28-20%29 Divide both sides by -20 to isolate x.

x=14 Reduce.

Answer:

So the solution is x=14
