Question 1131607: how do you solve 0.5=(0.85)^n

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
YOUR EQUATION IS .5 = .85 ^ N

take the log of both sides of this equation to get:

log(.5) = log(.85 ^ n)

since log(.85 & n) is the same as n * log(.85), the equation becomes:

log(.5) = n * log(.85)

divide both sides by log(.85) to get:

log(.5) / log(.85) = n

solve for n to get n = 4.265024282

replace n in the original equation of .5 = .85 ^ n to get:

.5 = .85 ^ 4.265024282 which becomes .5 = .5 which is true, confirming the solution is correct.
