This is functional notation, in which "f(x)" is read "f of x". It basically means that whatever number is inside the parentheses is to be substituted in place of the x.
f(x) = 7x-1 so as the Glade commercial says, "Plug it in, plug it in!!"
f(-3) = 7(-3) - 1
f(-3) = -21 -1
f(-3)= -22
