Parenthesis make the difference.
-x^2 means -x*x
But (-x)^2 = (-x)(-x) = x^2

-x^2 WHEN x=6
-(6)^2=-36
(-6)^2=36
---------------------
-3x^2=-3*6^2=-3*36=-108
-(3x)^2=-(3*6)^2=-(18)^2=-324
(-3x)^2=(-3*6)^2=-18^2=324
