Note that (-) / (-) = (+), so I can
rewrite the equation as:

Perform the divisions on both sides
+11+=+y+ answer

Well, in this kin of problem you want to get y by itself.
To do that you have to divide both sides by negative 8. That gives you 11=y
-88=-8y Given
-88/-8=-8y/8 Divide both sides by -8
11=y Result
