3a%5E3%2B2 = 3%28a%5E3%29%2B2. So if a=1, plug a in and get 3%281%5E3%29%2B2 or 3%2B2. so if a=1, then 3a%5E3%2B2=5. Just remember, 3a%5E3 is 3%28a%5E3%29 and not %283a%29%5E3. That would be 27a%5E3. So if there are no parentheses, then cube the variable first, and then multiply it by the coefficient.
