Question 351708: How can I explain why we need to be able to do/use a coordinate graph to second graders??? Please give me some examples I can use for them.

Love it! Second graders..hm..

considering:
1) All will be familiar with connecting dots to draw a picture, for ex.
.
2) And..actually "plotting points" on a coordinate graph is a "real" experience in the study of mathematics.
.
My recommendation would be to begin with:
1) having them pick points that would be in a straight line or could be connected to form a square or different types of triangles, for ex.
2) As it goes, one could explain how to "name" the points Pt(2,3) for ex.

My idea being: for them to discover for themselves, that this is fun and productive, in that they are are discovering that points can paint a "picture when placed on the coordinate graph. (stars can be a very fun & popular!)

Important they are successful and having fun. What I know is that there have been a number of questions coming thru about what it means to "plot"
