because circumference = 2 * pi * radius
and the difference in the diameter of the earth and the path travelled by the balloon is 1km
so the balloon travels an extra 2 * pi * 1km
using a calculator this is 6.28318530718km
rounding this to the nearest metre gives
6.283km
