Question 883006: Please help me solve the equation of Twice the sum of -2 and a number is the same as the number decreased by 1/2. Find the number:
2 (-2+x)=x-1/2; 2(-2x)=x-1/2; 4x=x-1/2; and that's as far as I can get. I know the answer is 7/2, but I don't know how to get that? HELP thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hello!

First off, let me thank you for letting us know how far you got; it is really helpful for us in allowing us to gauge where you are. =)

Your initial set up is correct; you just got a little off when you were trying to solve.
2%28-2+%2B+x%29+=+x+-+1%2F2
Distribute: -4+%2B+2x+=+x+-+1%2F2
Subtract x from both sides: -4+%2B+x+=+-1%2F2
Add 4 to both sides: x+=+4+-+1%2F2
Find a least common denominator: x+=+8%2F2+-+1%2F2
Subtract: x+=+7%2F2
Therefore, the answer is 7%2F2 (as you said).

I hope this helps!
