You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x=small angle
2x+18= large angle
2x+18+x=90
3x=72
x=24
2x+18=66
66+24=90

The measure of angle x is 18 more than twice the measure of angle y.
If angle x and y are complementary angles, find the measure of x
:
Write an equation for each statement
"The measure of angle x is 18 more than twice the measure of angle y."
x = 2y + 18
or
x - 2y = 18
:
"If angle x and y are complementary angles,"
x + y = 90
;
find the measure of x
:
Use elimination, subtract the 1st equation from the above equation:
x + y = 90
x - 2y = 18
---------------subtraction eliminates x, find y
3y = 72
y = 72%2F3
y = 24 degrees
:
Find x:
x = 2y + 18
x = 2(24) + 18
x = 48 + 18
x = 66 degrees
:
Check solution (are they complimentary?):
66 + 24 = 90
