y+x is the same as x+y. So y+x=17 is the same as x+y = 17

Add the two equations

x-y = 9
x+y = 17
---------
2x+0y = 26

2x = 26 ----> x = 13 (divide both sides by 2)

Now use x = 13 to find x

x-y = 9

13-y = 9

-y = 9-13

-y = -4

y = 4

So the solution is (x,y) = (13,4)
