You haven't set sqrt%28x%5E2%29 equal to anything, so I would say it's not an identity. All identities are in a sense equalities that are true for every value of x. For instance %28sin%28x%29%29%5E2%2B%28cos%28x%29%29%5E2=1 for every real number (any number can work) which makes this an identity.
