You can put this solution on YOUR website! A guy has 30 coins consisting of nickels dimes and quarters. He has 3 more
dimes than nickels. The total of the coins is $3.55. Find the number of
quarters. (I have done problems like this before without any problems but this
one is giving me a really hard time. It seems simple but I can't get the
correct solution..???
`
>>...a guy has 30 coins consisting of nickels dimes and quarters...<<
`
` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `N + D + Q = 30
`
>>...he has 3 more dimes than nickels...<<
`
` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `D = N + 3
`
>>...The total money value of the coins is $3.55...<<
`
` `$0.05N + $0.10D + $.25Q = $3.55
`
Dropping the dollar marks and multiplying thru by 100:
`
` ` ` ` ` ` 5N + 10D + 25Q = 355
`
Since all those terms can be easily divided by 5, we can
simplify it to
`
` ` ` ` ` ` ` `N + 2D + 5Q = 71
`
Now we have this system of equations:
`
` ` ` N + D + Q = 30
` ` ` ` ` ` ` D = N + 3
` ` N + 2D + 5Q = 71
Can you solve this system of equations? If not post again.
