Question 1116632: Dolebear law states the relationship between the rate at which snowy tree crickets chirp and the air temp of their enviroment. The formula is: T=50 =N-40/4 where T is a temperature in degrees Farenheit and N is a number of chirps per minute. If T=58 degrees, find the number of chirps per minute. I'm showed the answer is 78 in my book, however I do not understand how this answer was solved. Please show me the steps to arrive at this answer.

How do I solve for N?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The formula, if properly written, is T=50+(N-40)/4
which should appear, T=50%2B%28N-40%29%2F4.

To solve for N, just undo what has been done to it, and do this to BOTH sides of the equation.

N=4%28T-50%29%2B40

Given is that you have T=58. Substitute this and evaluate N.
72 chirps per minute.

To see every step,
T=50%2B%28N-40%29%2F4
T-50=%28N-40%29%2F4
%284%29%28T-50%29=4%28N-40%29%2F4
4%28T-50%29=N-40
4%28T-50%29%2B40=N-40%2B40
4%28T-50%29%2B40=N
N=4T-200%2B40
N=4T-160
