Hi there,
Carlos's gas tank is 1/2 full.
After he buys 8 gallons of gas, it is 5/6 full.
5/6 - 1/2 = 1/3
1/3 of a tank = 8 gallons
So, full tank = 8 x 3 = 24 gallons
Proof:
1/2 tank = 12 gallons
Add 8 gallons of gas
= 20 gallons
20/24 = 5/6
Hope this helps :-)

Carlos's gas tank is 1/2 full. After he buys 8 gallons of gas, it is 5/6 full.
How many gallons can Carlos's tank hold?
:
Let x = amt of gallons the tank can hold
:
5%2F6x = 8
multiply both sides by 6, gets rid of the denominator
5x = 6(8)
5x = 48
x = 48/5
x = 9.6 gallons
:
:
Check on a calc
5%2F6*9.6 = 8

Let amount when full be F
Then we get: %281%2F2%29+%2A+F+%2B+8+=+%285%2F6%29+%2A+F
F%2F2+%2B+8+=+5F%2F6
3F + 48 = 5F -------Multiplying by LCD, 6
48 = 5F - 3F
48 = 2F
F, or amount when full = highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C4%2C+48%2F2%2C+or%2C+24%2C+gallons%29%29
