Question 122133: I don't know the absolute value of -10. So can you plese help me and also explain it to me. THANK YOU Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The absolute value signs just mean that whatever the signs contain is to be brought out
of the signs as a positive value. The absolute value signs are just vertical bars as shown in
the following examples.
.
The absolute value of +10 is written as |+10| and it comes out as +10.
.
The absolute value of -10 is written as |-10| and it comes out of the absolute value signs
as +10 also.
.
More examples are:
.
|-25| = +25
|15| = +15
|-3| = +3
.
|x| = +x if x is greater than zero (meaning x is already positive inside the signs)
.
|x| = -(x) if x is a negative number ... for example if x is -2 then when you remove the absolute
value signs you take -(-2) and this equals +2. And that's what we said above. If you have
the absolute value of -2 (written as |-2|) it comes out of the absolute value signs as +2.
.
|x| = 0 if x equals zero.
.
Hope this helps you understand absolute values a little better. Just remember that whether
a number inside the absolute value signs is positive or negative, it comes out of the
absolute value signs with a positive value (or zero if it was zero inside the absolute value
signs).
