You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A man has 10 dollars to buy stamps.
He wants to buy twice as many 22 cent stamps as 14 cent stamps.
What is the greatest number of 22 cent stamps he can buy?
:
let x = no. of 22 cent stamps
let y = no. of 14 cent
:
Write an equation for each statement.
:
"A man has 10 dallors to buy stamps."
.22x + .14y = 10.00
:
"He wants to buy twice as many 22 cent stamps as 14 cent stamps."
x = 2y
We want to find x, divide both sides by 2
y = .5x
:
Replace x with 2y in the 1st equation
.22x + .14(.5x) = 10.00
.22x + .07x = 10.00
.29x = 10.00
x = 10/.29
x = 34 ea 22 cent stamps is the most he can buy & still get at least 17 ea 14 cent stamps

What is the greatest number of 22 cent stamps he can buy?
