Question 609620: Please help me solve this, I don't understand
A sales executive traveled 72 miles by car and then an additional 840 miles by plane. The rate of the plane was five times faster than the rate of the car. The total time of the trip was 5 hours. find the rate of the plane
what I tried was setting it up like this
72/x +840/5x=912

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are so close
but instead of 912 it should be 5 for the 5 hours
72/x+840/5x=5
x=48 but we want 5x the speed of the plane 5*48=240

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
r=rate of car, 5r=rate of plane
t=d/r
72/r + 840/5r = 5
360+840=25r multiply each side by 5r.
25r=1200
r=48 mph
5r=240 mph
