Hi
Let x represent the speed of the current
Question states*** Note: D/r = t, total time is 14hrs
45/(7-x) + 45/(7+x) = 14hr
45(7+x) + 45(7-x) = 14(49-x^2)
14x^2 +630 - 686 = 0
14x^2 = 56
x^2 = 4
x = 2 (tossing out negative solution)
Speed of the current is 2kmph
CHECKING our Answer***
45/9 + 45/5 = 5hr + 9hr = 14hr

A barge moves at 7kmh in still waters. If it travels 45 km up stream and 45 km downstream in a total of 14 hours. What is the speed of the current?
--------------------
c = current
45/(7+c) + 45/(7-c) = 14
