You can put this solution on YOUR website!
An executive drove from home at an average speed of 30mph to an airport where a helicopter was waiting.
The executive boarded the helicopter and flew to the corporate offices at an average speed of 60mph.
The entire distance was 150 miles.
The entire trip took 3 hrs. Find the distance from the airport to the corporate office.
:
Let d = distance from the airport to the office (at 60 mph)
the entire distance give as 150 mi, therefore:
(150-d) = distance from home to airport (at 30 mph)
:
Write a time equation: Time = dist%2Fspeed
:
drive time + helicopter time = 3 hrs
%28%28150-d%29%29%2F30 + d%2F60 = 3
Multiply equation by 60:
60*%28%28150-d%29%29%2F30 + 60*d%2F60 = 3(60)
Cancel out denominators
2(150-d) + d = 180
300 - 2d + d = 180
:
-2d + d = 180 - 300
:
-d = -120
d = 120 mi airport to office
then
150 - 120 = 30 min home to airport

Check solution in original equaiton
30/30 + 120/60 = 3
