You can put this solution on YOUR website! I could really use some help on this word problem.
One airplane flies 80mph faster than another airplane. The first one goes 1500mi in the same time as the second travels 850mi. What is the speed of each?
-----------------
1st airplane DATA:
distance 1500 miles ; rate = r+80 mph ; time = 1500/(r+80) hrs.
----------------------
2nd airplane DATA:
distane = 850 miles ; rate = r mph ; time = 850/r hrs.
-------------------------
EQUATION:
time = time
1500/(r+80) = 850/r
dividing by 50 you get:
30/(r+80) = 17/r
30r = 17r+17*80
13r = 17*80
r = 104.62 mph (speed of 2nd plane)
r+80 = 184.62 mph (speed of 1st plane)
