You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a messenger left a construction site and traveled by jeep at 51 km/h. Forty minutes later it was discovered that she had been given the wrong parcel. How fast must a second messenger travel to overtake her in one hour
--------------------
1st Messenger DATA:
Rate = 51 kph ; Time = 1 hr 40 min = (5/3) hrs.; distance = rt = 85 km
-----------------
2nd Messenger DATA:
Time = 1 hr ; distance = 85 km ; Rate = d/t = 85 kph
============
1st Messenger DATA:
Rate = 51 kph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 51x km
----------------
2nd Messenger DATA:
Time = x-(2/3) hr ; distance = 51x km ; Rate = 51x/(x-(2/3)) kph
------------------
EQUATIONS:
x-(2/3) = 1 hr
x = 5/3 hr
================
2nd Messenger Rate = (51(5/3))/((5/3)-(2/3)) = = 85/1 = 85 kph
=====================
An easier way to do this is to see that the 1st messenger is driving
51 kph for 1 hr 40 min or (5/3) hr which makes his distance = 85 km
So the 2nd Messenger must cover 85 miles in 1 hr or 85 kph.
