Question 41328: A parking lot is to be formed by fencing in a rectangular plot of land except for an entrance 12m wide along one of the sides. Find the dimensions of the lot with the greatest area. 300 m of fencing is used. Here's another word problem that I'm having some trouble with. Thanks! Answer by Paul(988) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Length = x
Width = y
EQUATION:
2x+2y=300+12
y=156-x (subsitution)
Area = l x w
A=x(156-x)
Differentate:
And x= 78
y=156-78
y=78
Hence, the dimensions are 78 x 78m.
